Event Details

Join Iowa PBS and the State Historical Society of Iowa on November 1 at 1 p.m. for a special screening and discussion event exploring the history and military themes of the American Revolution. The program will highlight the strategies, struggles and sacrifices of those who fought in America’s founding conflict. Guests will view selected clips from the upcoming Ken Burns documentary, The American Revolution, followed by a panel discussion with historians. The conversation will examine how the Revolutionary War was waged, the challenges faced on both sides, and the lasting impact of military service on the creation of the United States. Panelists include: 

  • Michael Vogt is presently a curator for the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum at Camp Dodge in Johnston, Iowa. He served on the board of directors as a volunteer and board chair for the Iowa Museum Association and the State Historical Society of Iowa Board of Trustees. Mike presents frequently at state and regional museum and history conferences and has published articles on American and military history in magazines, newspapers, journals, and books including Iowa Heritage Illustrated, The Iowan, The Des Moines Register, Iowa History Journal, and The Biographical Dictionary of Iowa.
  • Denise Baker Hamilton is a proud member of the Jean Marie Cardinell Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, where she currently serves as chapter regent. She has previously held the roles of chapter registrar and vice regent, and now also serves as the America 250 chair for the Iowa Society, DAR, helping to lead statewide efforts in commemorating the nation’s upcoming semiquincentennial.
  • Mark Barloon, a senior lecturer of history, has taught at Central College since 2002. When he is not teaching military history, he offers courses in environmental history and modern European history.
