The Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) was established in 1986 via SF 2175 as part of a comprehensive statewide organization. At its founding, it consisted of the State Historical Society of Iowa, Iowa Arts Council, Iowa Public Television, and the Terrace Hill Commission. Effective July 1, 1992, IPTV and The State Library were transferred to the Department of Public Instruction and the Terrace Hill Commission was transferred to the Governor's Office. Produce Iowa, Iowa's Film Office, became a part of DCA in 2013. Cultural Affairs dissolved in 2023 via SF 514 when Iowa Arts Council, State Historic Preservation Office and Produce Iowa transferred to the Iowa Economic Development Authority. State Historical Society of Iowa transferred to the Department of Administrative Services. See also RG 49 State Historical Society of Iowa and RG 7 Arts Council.
