In 1992, the 74th General Assembly created the Commission of Veterans Affairs. Veterans Affairs maintains records concerning Iowa veterans, assists county Veteran Affairs commissioners, administers the War Orphan Educational Aid Fund, keeps a military grave registry, operates the Iowa Veterans Cemetery and establishes policy for the operation of the Iowa Veterans Home. Following the creation of the Commission, functions pertaining to veterans were transferred from the Office of Adjutant General to Veterans Affairs.
