Library, Archives & Research Center Volunteer Opportunities

The State Historical Society's Library, Archives, and Research Center offers various volunteer opportunities for those interested in helping preserve and share Iowa history. Whether a seasoned historian, a student, or simply someone with a deep appreciation for the past, there are many ways to volunteer.

How to Apply
If you are interested in applying to become a volunteer, please complete and submit the Volunteer Interest Form. If volunteer opportunities are not currently available, we will keep the application on file for the future.

Time Commitment

Volunteers are expected to volunteer at least one half day a week during normal museum hours and attend any additional meetings. Additional volunteer opportunities at special events will also be available to all interested volunteers.

Volunteer Tasks and Opportunities

Volunteers at the Archives, Library, and Research Center can assist with various tasks, including but not limited to:

Tasks with Materials and Collections

Shelving and shelf-reading: Correctly organizing books on shelves and ensuring they are in the right order.
Book repair: Performing minor repairs on damaged books and cleaning them.
Book processing: Labeling new books, applying covers, and other processing tasks.
Collection management: Assisting with collection development, taking inventory, and helping to digitize materials.

Tasks Assisting Patrons and Community

Front-desk help: Greeting patrons, answering phones, and directing them to resources.
Assisting with on and off site reference: Preparing materials in support of researchers visits or requests.
Technology assistance: Helping patrons use computers and other library technology.
Program support: Assisting programs and other community workshops.

Administrative and Creative Tasks

Office support: Folding brochures, stuffing envelopes, and other administrative duties.
Outreach: Promoting services at community events and festivals.

History Assistance

History Assistance: Volunteers with local history knowledge can assist patrons with genealogy or Iowa history related questions.
