In 1856, the General Assembly passed the first act governing insurance companies with the responsibility under the State Auditor until 1913. For records prior to 1913, see RG 9 Auditor which include insurance company agents records, annual statements, articles of incorporation and bylaws, corporate records, and letter books. In 1913, the 35th General Assembly created the office of Commissioner of Insurance as the head of the Insurance Department. Some records created between 1969 and 1988 were transferred to the Department of Commerce (RG 20) and may be available there.
Some or all of these records are available to search in the Iowa History Collections Catalog.
