The Iowa Commission on the Status of Women (ICSW) was made a statutory commission in 1972, following several years as a Governor's Commission beginning in 1969. Its purpose was to work to equalize women's opportunities and to promote full participation by women in the economic, political and social life of the state. In 1986, the Commission on the Status of Women became a division of the Department of Human Rights. In 2023, the Department of Human Rights dissolved and became absorbed into the Department of Health and Human Services. In 2024, the ICSW dissolved and became part of the newly formed Human Rights Board.
