The first Iowa State Fair was held in Fairfield in 1854 and was managed for many years by the State Agricultural Society (later the Department of Agriculture). A separate State Fair Board was established in 1923, effective October 28, 1924. For records prior to 1924, See RG 4 Agriculture.
