In 2000, the Iowa Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission was established in the Department of Economic Development by the 78th General Assembly to operate as "a nonprofit corporation for the purposes of coordinating and promoting the observance" of Iowa's commemoration of the Lewis and Clark expedition. A separate fund in the State Treasury was created to be used in funding the state's observance. The functions of the commission were scheduled to end on December 31, 2007.
