Interested in assisting and helping with the State Historical Society's Research Center? Fill out the Volunteer Interest Form to get involved at the Research Center and Archives. Volunteer opportunities vary from assisting with archival projects or helping patrons in the Research Center. Volunteer opportunities are on an as needed basis. If volunteer opportunities in this area are not currently available, we will keep the application on file for the future. You must be 18 years or older to volunteer.

Are you enthusiastic about Iowa history? Do you enjoy connecting with people and sharing engaging stories? The State Historical Museum of Iowa is looking for passionate individuals to join our docent program.
As a museum docent, you'll be at the heart of our visitor experience, guiding tours, leading discussions, and bringing our collections to life for guests of all ages. This is a unique opportunity to deepen your knowledge of Iowa’s past, develop public speaking skills, and contribute to your community.
How to Apply
If you are interested in applying to become a docent, please complete and submit the museum docent application. The next docent orientation and trainings begin in early November 2025.

Training
Docents must attend a comprehensive orientation program and participate in ongoing training sessions with museum staff throughout the year.
Time Commitment
Once training is completed, docents are expected to provide at least one guided tour each month during normal museum hours, as well as attend any meetings. Docents can sign up for available tours, or tours will be scheduled according to docent availability. Additional volunteer opportunities at special events will also be available to docents.
Responsibilities
Docents are an important part of the visitor experience at the State Historical Museum of Iowa. Their primary responsibility is to lead exhibit tours for all ages of museum audiences. Additionally, docents are required to attend all meetings and training sessions, and continuously deepen their knowledge of the museum's collection.

National History Day in Iowa needs you!
Volunteer judges evaluate student projects and create a positive experience for Iowa's young historians during district contests across the state in March and at the state contest in April. All judges will be provided with training prior to contests—no experience necessary!
Volunteers must be 18 or older to participate. Get involved today!

- Internship Program: Currently enrolled college students may be interested in applying for the State Historical Society's internship program.
- Special Event Volunteers: If you prefer to volunteer at the museum less frequently, consider becoming a special event volunteer. The museum hosts several programs throughout the year that require assistance from special volunteers in various capacities. Complete and submit our volunteer application to be considered for future events.
- Silver Cord Program: If you are looking to obtain volunteer hours toward the Silver Cord Program please check your high school's Silver Cord Program website and social media page for opportunities at the State Historical Museum of Iowa. All available opportunities will be posted through the schools.
