World War I exposed the fault lines in Iowa between immigrant communities perceived as "too German" and the "Americans" already in the area. Join State Historical Society of Iowa Administrator Valerie Van Kooten as we explore a piece of Iowa history from the Peoria/New Sharon/Sully areas of south central Iowa, where a group called "The Black Hand" tried to intimidate and burn out Dutch settlers, while the Dutch themselves did little to help their cause with their defiant stances. What happens when two cultures collide?

The Iowa History 101 webinars share Iowa stories and the history of the state through a cultural history lens on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Registration is required for each event and to receive a link to the recorded program.
