Description

The New York City subway system - a railway network in tunnels under New York City - opened in 1904. It cost five cents to ride the subway in 1904, and 150,000 people rode the subway on opening day. The population of New York City was 3,437,202 in 1900 and had grown to 8,175,133 in 2010.
