The Annals of Iowa is published quarterly by the State Historical Society of Iowa. Print copies are available by subscription. Back issues from 1984 to the present are also available for purchase. The current year is available in print only. For issues published prior to 1992, availability is limited. Because we cannot offer refunds, please contact us prior to ordering issues published prior to 1992 to confirm availability.

The Palimpsest
All issues of the Palimpsest (1920-1995) are available online.
The Palimpsest was a historical magazine published by the State Historical Society of Iowa from 1920 until 1996, when it was renamed Iowa Heritage Illustrated. It was published monthly from 1920-1972, bimonthly from 1973-1985, and quarterly after 1986. The last issue was vol. 76 no. 4, Winter 1995.
Iowa Heritage Illustrated
All issues of Iowa Heritage Illustrated (1996-2014) are available online.
Iowa Heritage Illustrated was a quarterly historical magazine published by the State Historical Society of Iowa from 1996, when it replaced The Palimpsest, through 2014. The first issue was vol. 77, no. 1, Spring 1996, and the last was vol. 93, no. 2, Summer 2014.
The Goldfinch: Iowa History for Young People
All issues of the Goldfinch (1975-2000) are available online.
The Goldfinch was published quarterly by the State Historical Society of Iowa from 1975-2000. It is an Iowa history magazine for children, ages 8 to 13. Each issue focused on a theme – such as immigrants, diaries, home and family, and “Iowa’s Kid Heroes” – and includes articles, games, photos, and fiction.
