Volunteer Opportunities

Do you have a passion for history? The State Historical Society of Iowa is looking for enthusiastic volunteers like you! Whether you are in search of a one-time experience or ongoing volunteer opportunities, we may have something for you. 

Volunteer opportunities with the State Historical Society of Iowa are on an as needed basis. If volunteer opportunities are not currently available, we will keep the application on file for the future.  You must be 18 years or older to volunteer. 

Library, Archives & Research Center Volunteers

Museum Docent Program

Do you enjoy connecting with people and sharing engaging stories? The State Historical Museum of Iowa is looking for passionate individuals to join our docent program. As a museum docent, you'll be at the heart of our visitor experience, guiding tours, leading discussions, and bringing our collections to life for guests of all ages.   Learn more about the program and how to apply to become a docent. 

National History Day in Iowa 

National History Day in Iowa needs you! 

Volunteer judges evaluate student projects and create a positive experience for Iowa's young historians during district contests across the state in March and at the state contest in April. All judges will be provided with training prior to contests—no experience necessary! 

Volunteers must be 18 or older to participate. Get involved today!

Additional Volunteer Opportunities

• Special Event Volunteers: If you prefer to volunteer at the museum less frequently, consider becoming a special event volunteer. The museum hosts several programs throughout the year that require assistance from special volunteers in various capacities. Complete and submit our volunteer application to be considered for future events.
• Internship Program: Currently enrolled college students may be interested in applying for the State Historical Society's internship program.
• Silver Cord Program: If you are looking to obtain volunteer hours toward the Silver Cord Program please check your high school's Silver Cord Program website and social media page for opportunities at the State Historical Museum of Iowa. All available opportunities will be posted through the schools.
