Do you have a passion for history? The State Historical Society of Iowa is looking for enthusiastic volunteers like you! Whether you are in search of a one-time experience or ongoing volunteer opportunities, we may have something for you.
State Historical Society of Iowa
Fill out the Volunteer Interest Form to get involved at State Historical Society locations in Des Moines and Iowa City, as well as historic sites across the state. Volunteer opportunities vary and are on an as needed basis. If volunteer opportunities are not currently available, we will keep the application on file for future opportunities. You must be 18 years or older to volunteer.
National History Day in Iowa
National History Day in Iowa needs you! Volunteer judges evaluate student projects and create a positive experience for Iowa's young historians during district contests across the state in March and at the state contest in April. All judges will be provided with training prior to contests—no experience necessary! Volunteers must be 18 or older to participate. Click here to get involved!

Additional Volunteer Opportunities
- Internship Program: Currently enrolled college students may be interested in applying for the State Historical Society's internship program.
- Silver Cord Program: If you are looking to obtain volunteer hours toward the Silver Cord Program please check your high school's Silver Cord Program website and social media page for opportunities at the State Historical Museum of Iowa. All available opportunities will be posted through the schools.
