Thursday, August 24, 2023 - 12:00 to 1:00pm

Register to join the State Historical Society of Iowa for a 60-minute online learning series to learn about the way that charitable organizations and children's institutions used family farms as an early form of free foster care for children. In addition to the well-known orphan trains of the late 1800s, other groups including local governments utilized similar strategies for placing out children. The problems with these placements, and the changing ideas about childhood played a role in developing the paid foster care system we are familiar with today.

The Iowa History 101 webinars share Iowa stories and the history of the state through a cultural history lens on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Registration is required for each event.
