Peek into the past at History on the Rocks! Join us quarterly for a night of history-themed programs and activities, plus beverages and snacks for purchase.
Delve into historic death rituals and mourning practices at History on the Rocks. State Curator Leo Landis will discuss Iowa events of mourning and remembrance as well as Victorian era mourning practices. Artist Veronica O’Hern will discuss and demonstrate the lost tradition of “hairwork” that was popularized during the Victorian era. The art of “hairwork” was a common practice to create mementos and to remember a loved-one. Experience the tradition with a hands-on activity creating small objects out of synthetic hair. Before the night is over, browse funerary and mourning artifacts from the museum’s collection.
Doll distributing will be on site to sample Iowa craft beverages.
